Welcome to Pine Brook
The Pine Brook School, founded in 1972 as Wightwood School, is an independent coeducational day school serving children from Pre-K through 8th Grade. The spacious buildings occupy land adjacent to protected wetlands. The school offers a rich and educationally-challenging academic program in a learning environment that is sensitive and responsive to each child's developmental strengths, needs and interests. The carefully-articulated core curriculum in math, language arts, social studies and science employs a thematic approach; that is, a single topic appropriate to the grade level is explored through use of all the academic disciplines. Teacher specialists in art, music, Spanish, multicultural studies, library and physical education provide additional enrichment to all age levels. The Pine Brook School has committed itself to small class sizes and strong relationships among faculty, students and parents. It is also committed to ethnic and cultural diversity and gender equity. It seeks to graduate students with the skills to achieve personal and educational success, the values to make a contribution to society and the resources to enjoy the arts and culture of a diverse world. The Pine Brook School strives to instill in its students: Knowledge—an understanding of the information we have imparted to them. Skills—the ability to discover further information on their own. Concepts—a sense of ownership of the underlying conclusions. Problem-solving—the capacity to apply knowledge, skills, and concepts to new situations.
On April 11, 2007, the corporation voted to approve the Board of Trustees’ recommendation to change the name of Wightwood School to The Pine Brook School. Pine Brook is the name of an offshoot of Pine Creek that runs north of the school campus. It is the thread that binds all of our students – past, present and future – since all will have studied, played and even gotten covered in mud in that beloved brook. Researching a new name was part of a three-year strategic plan to ensure the success of the school’s future. Our 35th anniversary year and a new name allow us opportunities to honor the past while celebrating a new and bright future. While much is changing, our mission and core values remain the same, and learning will always be a way of life at The Pine Brook School.
